How to identify an access point in WireShark? (Beginner)

  • retag add tags

Hello, I’m new to WireShark and trying to learn. I have researched the internet but I can not find any explanation. Assuming that I do not already know the MAC or IP of the access point, how can I find and identify an access point on a network? I will really appreciate any help.

Wireshark has a Wireshark WLAN setup link explaining how to set up Wireshark to capture WLAN packets. You can only learn MAC and IP information for open networks. Networks that are protected, you will need the key.

Are you trying to find the AP inside or outside the network? If I was trying to locate an AP, I wouldn't use Wireshark. Inside I would use an IP scanner such as Advance IP scanner to find the IP and Mac address. Outside I would use a WiFi monitor to find the AP. I've only used the WLAN for Wireshark as I'm connected to an AP. Never used it for trying to hack a network. I would use other utilities such as AirCrack-ng to get into a Wifi network.
