Capture J1939

Hello all,

I am wondering if there is a way to capture J1939 information with wireshark.

Additionally Can wireshark decode the messages without a DBC file? I have a CL2000 from CSS electronics, however they no longer support wireshark and have moved completely to a program SavvyCAN. This program also requires the use of a DBC file, however their file is 500 euro. I am looking for something a bit more open sourc.e

Hi,

There is a dissector for J1939 if you look at the Wireshark source code.

I also see Controller Area Network (CAN) options in Protocols from the Wireshark preferences.

I think you could try decoding J1939 if you can provide the data in a packetize file format Wireshark understand.

As an alternative, you could also try importing from a HEX dump of the packets.

Not sure how to capture J1939/CAN data. Sorry.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

JF
