User Guide Version Numbers

OK... this has been bugging me for ages, why is it that the version of the User Guide is always ahead of the actual [software] version of Wireshark?

For example, the current RC is 3.0.0 however the User Guide is 3.1.0.

I can just about understand a User Guide being a version or two behind the software version, but ahead...???

Thanks.

It's because the User Guide - and Developer Guide - on the Web site are built from the tip of the master branch of the Wireshark Git repository, and the 3.0 release is now on a separate branch, so the master branch is for the next release after 3.0, which will be called 3.1 while it's a development release and 3.2 when it''s eventually released.

Perhaps we should build separate versions of the guide for all the releases we're currently offering, and either not offer one built from the master branch or offer it as "future release" or something such as that; you might want to file a bug report on the Wireshark Bugzilla about this.

OTOH, development of the User Guide usually trails the software, sometimes considerably. So having a newer User Guide can still be relevant for the versions before the stated one. In short, we're programmers, not document writers, and that shows.
