Just downloaded Wireshark on Debian it says it couldn't run /usr/bin/dumpcap in child process: permission denied

"couldn't run /usr/bin/dumpcap in child process: permission denied" How do I grant it permission? Through the terminal?

You should have had a setup dialog about privilege setup. Anyway read here how to set this up properly: /usr/share/doc/wireshark-common/README.Debian. You probably need to add your username to the wireshark group, logout and login again and see how it goes.

it still will not grant permission and I can't access /usr/share/doc/wireshark-common/README.Debian saying bash: /usr/share/doc/wireshark-common/README.Debian: Permission denied

It's a text file explaining what to do, not a script to execute (hence the Permission denied). Try typing less /usr/share/doc/wireshark-common/README.Debian
