What are the interfaces marked with asterisk? Brand new Windows 2008r2sp2 eng, Wireshark 4.0.16, no "former" adapters present. Only two intel adapters teamed using intel utility. Haven't found answer in documentation.
The Windows native command ipconfig /all will most likely also show interfaces with names ending with an asterisk. (So it is not a Wireshark or Npcap issue.)
For example "Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual" and "WAN Miniport" pseudo interfaces. These are automatically created.
The 'Manage Interfaces' in Wireshark should show these as well, with the "description" shown as comment.
Here you can also unselect interfaces you don't want to see in the 'Capture' list.
I'm not exactly sure, but seem to be a pseudo interface created by npcap. Maybe the npcap folks have more info.
I know, by empirical inspection, that on my main machine "Local Area Connection* 8" is my IPSec VPN so I can capture on that to see the clear traffic in the VPN tunnel.
There are no created connections via vpn, only standard Micro$oft stub devices like "ppp miniport". Looks like this "Local area connections" are for these stubs. But, when i create some vpn connection there will be brand new Local area connection. Stupid imho...
