Some ICMP packets captured but not others?

  • retag add tags

Hello, I'm able to see packets captured in wireshark when I ping my default gateway, but when I try to ping a website, nothing shows up even though the ping is successful. I have it filtered for ICMP but I also made sure I was getting other traffic without the filter (I am). I've tried all of the interfaces that show traffic and even some that do not. I'm very new to this stuff, so I'm probably doing something wrong, but I tried searching for answers elsewhere and couldn't find anything and I just can't for the life of me figure out what I need to change.

Are yu by any chance using a VPN? That would make the ping traffic encapsulated (and encrypted) so you would not be able to see it. The ping to the default gateway is local, so this traffic won't be encapsulated.

If you are not using a VPN, maybe you could describe your network setup and how and where (on which system) you are capturing.
