The program is very user friendly. However most people should not qualify as users. If Wireshark does not make sense to you then is very likely you have no use for it. But as Jaap said somethimes everyone is used to a certain feature that is confusing for newcomers.

The fact that most people won't understand Wireshark is not inconceivable. Most people aren't network engineers, to which this power tool is targeted. This is not a general purpose program, but requires at least a basic understanding of networking to be useful in any manner.

However, with this basic understanding of networking mastered, there's a ton of learning material available, through SharkFest, on YouTube, in books, just to name a few examples.

The approach for the development of Wireshark has always been to glean as much details about any packet on the network. It's like a network packet microscope. Is a microscope always the right tool for the job, any job? No, you have to pick the right tool for the job, which may or may not be this one.

If you have an idea about what constitutes a more user friendly version of Wireshark, we would love to hear though. There can be valuable ideas in there, that could be worked out.
