NPCAP Install failure 0x8007007e

  • retag add tags

Just upgraded to WireShark 3.4.0 from 3.2.2 and NPCAP fails to install. Tried reinstalling previous versions of WireShark with no luck so now, WireShark isn't working. This is the first install failure since Ethereal. Went to the NPCAP site and tried downloading there, still no luck. Tried contacting NPCAP and so far nothing. I searched this error and tried everything I found with no luck. Anyone out there run into this issue? I'm running WIN10 Home

Well, I did the Network Reset and..... It removed the drivers for my network cards and when I installed the drivers for them, it failed. So I called HP and they ran me through some steps, no luck. SO.... I restored the PC using Acronis Backup Software to 11/17/20 and problem is now resolved. So, I'm sticking to Wireshark Ver 3.2.2 and it's working fine again. Thanks for your response!

Unfortunately this is an npcap issue, and you should raise the issue at their support site.

What you can try:

  1. Stop Wireshark, uninstall npcap from "Apps", you may even need to reboot to stop everything using npcap before uninstalling it..
  2. Reboot.
  3. Install the latest npcap from their site.

If this still doesn't work, uninstall npcap and try installing the obsolete and unsupported WinPcap from here. Wireshark will use this if it can't find anything better.

Sounds like you have some issue with your Windows IP stack. There are various "reset" articles around, but I hesitate to recommend any as I've never used them.
