Print selected packets to text file isn't working on Windows

  • retag add tags

Hello, I am using WS version 3.2.3. I am trying to print to a text file for a selected packet from the WS listing screen, with File\Export Packets Dissectins\As Plain Text, choose “Selected Packet Only" and writing the file name. I got an empty text file for several times. I used before earlier versions of WS, and it worked? Is there a problem in 3.2.3 version? Please help me, as I am a lecturer in academic and want to explain it to my students. appretiate your answer as soon as possible.

Additional info. Usually I choose Selected packet only, in the dialog box (in botomn/left). When I choose All packets, I got a good text file with the info of all the lines displayed in the listing area. Why selected packets does not work for me? I need to display only one line Thanks in advance.

As a workaround you can Edit->Mark Packet(s) (will mark the selected packets) then do the export for Marked packets

It works, but change the time & line No. and too comlicated just for printing one line It like going from DC to NY, through Niagra Falls. It is not a solution, to my opinion. Thanks

Bug in Wireshark-on-Windows, to be specific. The problem doesn't show up on other platforms.

It's new in 3.2.x, so it shouldn't be an issue on 3.0.x or 2.6.x. A fix has been checked in, and it should be in the next 3.2.x release.

Appretiate Bub to receive a message when new 3.2.x release will be available.

Wireshark-announce list is pretty low traffic.
Or follow @WiresharkNews

The Roadmap page on the Wireshark Wiki currently says the expected date for the next 3.2.x release, 3.2.4, is 2020-05-20.

If you want to get the results of an automated build of the 3.2.x branch - which would not be an official release - you can go to the automated builds page, look under "win32" or "win64" (depending on whether you need a 32-bit build or can run a 64-bit build) for the most recent "Wireshark-win64-3.2.4rc0" .exe file, download that, and run it to install the "bleeding edge" version.

Do NOT, however, keep running that automated build once the final release comes out; bugs filed against an automated build after the corresponding release comes out might just be closed with "try the official release".

You have to select something(s) of the packet format on the right of the dialog.

Thanks Jaap for your quick answer. In the Export Packets Dissectins dialog box, I selected: Packets summery line, Include colomn heading, Packet details, AS displayed as always I did before. Still got an empty text file. Additional info. Usually I choose Selected packet only, in the dialog box (in botomn/left). When I choose All packets, I got a good text file with the info of all the lines displayed in the listing area. Why selected packets does not work for me? I need to display only one line Thanks in advance.

In the dialog for Export Packets Dissection -> As Plain Text, what are the numbers in the "Selected packets only" row?

8 packets displayed. 123 packets captured Thanks.

How do you get different numbers on the "Selected packets only" row. Do you have a display filter active?

File -> Export Specified Packets... works for Selected packet.
File -> Export Packet Dissections doesn't seem to receive the selected packet list for any of the As... formats.
