I would like Wireshark to build a list of all devices on my network

Can I use Wireshark to build a list of all devices on my network, showing each MAC address and the associated hostname once only? I have searched the previous questions for this but have not come up with an answer.

I'd ideally like to export this file, edit it and make it my ethers file. I would like to be able to see devices currently using my network and over time, devices joining and leaving the network. I'm OK with snapshots as I don't intend to run Wireshark perpetually. I have set up a gigabit switch to mirror ports to a capture port and put it right in front of my router.

Any suggestions to best achieve this or other ideas for improvement?

What you are looking for is a network monitor application, not packet dissection. A tool like ARPwatch could be more suitable for this. Or Nmap for that matter.
