Reason for different update paths?

I see Wireshark continues to update its 2.2 version while simultaneously updating 2.4. Is there any reason someone may continue to use 2.2 over 2.4 (and thus the reason they are maintained separately)? Thank you

Some extra reasons are given on the wireshark Wiki Lifecycle page, but basically the previous version is maintained with bugfixes.

Platform dependencies may limit users to a particular version, e.g. RH LTS versions, along with private plugins not ported to the newer version.
